How to link Change to Incident during creation with API

I'm trying to create a Change via the API, based on an incident, and link the change to the incident.  However, I cannot get the link back to the original incident to work correctly.  How can I create the association on a Change back to the original Incident via the API?

I've tried:

<change>

..other fields...

<incident>
<number>55</number>
</incident>

</change>

.. but this just creates the Change without the incident linked

Also tried:

<incident>
<id>$($ticketObject.id)</id>
</incident>

.. but this just creates the Change without the incident linked

<incident_id>19344758</incident_id>

.. but this just creates the Change without the incident linked

<incidents>
<incident>
<id>19344758</id>
</incident>
</incidents>

...this gives an error: "The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error"

<incidents>
<incident>
<number>55</number>
</incident>
</incidents>

...this gives an error: "The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error"
